Starlites Competitive Dance Team Heads To Dance Worlds

{THIS ARTICLE WAS ORIGINALLY FEATURED IN THE TIMES HERALD}

There is nothing quite like performing in front of a crowd when the bright lights are on and everyone’s attention is on you.

While it may take some a lifetime to master the skill of being level headed under such pressure, the Huron Physical Arts Center Starlites senior dance team has already learned to be cool on the big stage.

“These kids have been with me since they were very young,” Starlites coach Laurie Charron said. “They came to me at an age where they didn’t understand stage fright. They have done it so much that they aren’t afraid to go out there.”

The Starlites senior small hip hop dance team is preparing to head to the Dance Worlds International Dance Championships April 24-28 at the Epcot Center of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The Starlites qualified for the event by performing well at the Champion Spirit National Dance Championships in Chicago, Il; March 7-8.

The Starlites received a bid to the invitational only Dance Worlds for their hip-hop routine and will face competition from countries that include the United Kingdom, Scotland, Japan, Slovenia, Mexico, Ireland and Australia.

They will need to place within the top three among United States teams to advance into the final day of the competition. They will only get one opportunity however, to do their 3-minute routine, which features dynamic moves and tumbles that will hopefully draw the judges favor.

Ten specific hip hop judges will be on hard to critique the performances.

“It’s just exciting to know we are going to a really big dance competition,” 13-year-old Emma Huston said. “We are getting to compete against other countries. It’s just really exciting. We’ve grown together as sisters. We know each other really well.

“It’s fun dancing with them and just coming to practice with them.”

The Starlites have had tremendous success throughout the season on many different levels. The Tiny, Mini and Youth teams will compete at the U.S. Finals National Dance Championships in Virginia Beach, VA; May 10.

“It’s really nerve wrecking because we are preparing for this big dance competition we have never been to before,” 13-year-old Hailee Kleeves said. “But we are really excited to be going there. We are more family than friends. We don’t perform for ourselves but for everyone else on the stage.

“I’m just really proud of the team and how far we have come as a group. We just need to get focused and practice harder and harder each day as we are here. We are adding a couple new tricks to our routine, We want to be confident when we get there.”

The Starlites will spend the next few weeks preparing before the make the trip to Florida. When they do, they expect to be fully prepared to take the stage by storm.

“We are taking this routine and breaking it down count by count,” Charron said. “We are looking at body angles, we are looking at arm levels. we are looking at positions. They are easy to train. They have been amazing.”
